Wood burner and solid fuel appliance servicing
If you have had your burner for a period of time or feel that it no longer
works as well as it once did, I am happy to look it over and service
the appliance.
The full service consists of the following
|

 |
- Renew as necessary all rope seals with thermal rope.
A leaking seal will cause a drop in efficiency and can
potentially spill deadly, odourless carbon monoxide.
- Remove, clean and refit baffle/throat plate.
This is critical over a period of time because if the baffle
plate opening clogs with soot or debris efficiency is lost, draw
reduced and once again the potential for carbon monoxide spills.
- Smoke draw test.
To ensure the smoke is being drawn correctly into the chimney
and out into the outside environment and not leaking into other
rooms, houses/flats or the loft space.
- Renew any crumbling fire cement.
If flue pipe seals leak they can potentially leak carbon monoxide, but
they will certainly decrease efficiency and increase fuel
consumption.
- Clean glass.
This increases radiant heat from the appliance and hence efficiency.
- Renew any silicone seals with high temperature, colour
appropriate silicone.
Some appliances are sealed with high temperature silicone or fire
gum, I routinely carry these.
- Advice on keeping the wood burner in good working order.
Total cost £50.00 per appliance

 |
- Renew glass as necessary.
When the glass cracks or is missing the burner decreases in
efficiency and can lead to carbon monoxide spills. Dependant on the
appliance in question I can get firelite glass cut to the appropriate
size and fit it usually within a few days.

 |
- Supply a carbon monoxide alarm.
Since October 2010 all new installations should be accompanied by
the fitting of a carbon monoxide alarm conforming to BS EN
50291:2001.
Carbon monoxide is odourless, colourless and in
sufficient quantity, deadly. It has been know to affect people in
rooms other than the one in which the appliance is installed. I can
supply and fit an approved device.
From £27.50 for each device
|
 |
- Supply and fit bird guards at chimney pot level.
Birds, nests and avian detritus are a common cause of blocked flues
and chimney fires. A bird guard installed at chimney pot level is an
effective preventative measure. I can supply and fit bird guards for
each pot as required.
From £45.00 per pot
|
|
- Investigate and cure lack of 'draw' from faulty installations or
problem appliances or smoke 'blow back' into room.
Sometimes lack of draw can be cured by servicing the appliance,
other times, if the chimney is located in the shadow of other buildings,
more inventive action is required. A solution can usually be found.

 |
- Renew or touch-up and rust spots or damaged paint with a
suitable high temperature replacement.
Some appliances will emit a smell after repainting
though this will
dissipate after one or two uses. A few appliances (Machine Mart wood
burners seem prone to this) flake soon after use, if the appliance
is cleaned and repainted in high quality paint this does not usually
reoccur.
From £55.00 per appliance
|
|
- Renew or replace distorted plates or castings.
This is usually a job that requires specialist
manufactured parts, if these can be sourced a damaged appliance can
be brought back into service. With appliances I've installed
sourcing these parts is usually relatively straight forward.

Please note a service is NOT a substitute for correct
installation or regular sweeping of the chimney.I recommend Sean
Wilson the
Brighton Chimney Sweep for effective sweeping.
As with all my
work I endeavour to leave your home clean and in good order. I take
responsibility for the disposal of any waste products.
