Ekol Clarity 5 example installation in Park Close Portslade
Brighton BN41
This installation was in Park Close in Portslade, Brighton.
The installation was in a 1930s house and the Clarity was selected
for its traditional but unfussy look and for its size (5kW) and
efficiency (80.3%).
The opening was already prepared and the hearth was suitably tiled
(namely 12mm thick non combustible material). The flue had been swept
and it was demonstrated to be smoke tight so no liner was required.
The wooden mantel was a problem as it was within 15" (three
times width) of the Clarity's 5" (125mm) flue pipe. This was solved
with shielding the pipe which allows this distance to be halved to
7½".
The Ekol Clarity 5 is a steel stove with a cast iron door and
grate. This gives it multi-fuel capabilities and the door handle and
air controls have a satisfying chunkiness.
The throat plate is fixed with two 10mm bolts in a similar
arrangement to that used by the Danish stove company Morsų. To avoid
this seizing over a period of time I loosen these bolts and leave them
finger tight.
The perforated throat plate also allows jets of flame to inhabit
the firebox once the stove has reached temperature which is an
attractive and interesting aspect of the stove.
The total installation came to £945
including supply of the burner and was completed in one visit in just
over a morning.
