Chimney pots and cowls
In most cases when using a wood burner or an open fire an open pot
is the best solution. However in certain circumstances where either
downdrafts or heavy prolonged rainfall are experienced it might be
advisable to fit one of the following cowls.

Usage:
Prevent birds or rodents falling into the flue. Pros:
Cheap and effective, easily removed if necessary. I use them on
my chimneys, robust.
Cons: Don't forget to tell the chimney sweep if
one is fitted.

Rain cowl with bird guard

I always keep these in stock. |
Usage:
To prevent rain ingress whilst still allowing solid fuel usage.
Pros: Stops almost all rain, birds and rodents.
Stainless steel construction largely corrosion resistant
Cons: Non traditional appearance. Don't forget
to tell the chimney sweep if one is fitted.

Anti downdraft cowl (Mad cowl pictured)

Usage: Anti downdraft, prevents rain ingress. Pros: Cheap and effective anti downdraft cowl, helps
stop rain ingress. Made of stainless steel and aluminium then powder
coated in terracotta. Can be used for gas. British made.
Cons: Very high winds will be able to overwhelm this
cowl. Remember to inform the sweep.

Usage: Anti downdraft, prevents rain ingress. Pros: Possibly the ultimate anti downdraft cowl. Stops rain ingress.
Cons: Sometimes it will not sit happily with a bank of other
pots and its appearance does not appeal to
all.

 Available in terracotta and

Usage: Anti downdraft, prevents rain ingress and
creates uplift. Pros: Effective at creating uplift, effective against
downdraft and helps prevent rain ingress. Can be used with Dinak twin
wall chimneys.
Cons: It needs to be serviced regularly (every few
years) to prevent
fouling. On short chimneys the Dragon cowl
is a better bet. Remember to
inform the sweep.

Dragon stainless 6" (150mm) cowl

Usage: Anti downdraft
rotates and places itself in the opposite direction to the wind no
matter of its strength prevents rain ingress and
creates uplift. Pros: Effective against
downdraft and bird problems and prevents rain ingress. Can be used
with Dinak twin wall chimneys. Can be swept in position unlike
rotators and 'H' shaped cowls. Maximum working temperature of
500°C due to exterior bearings. Attractive appearance polished
stainless steel and nickel. Self correcting/rotating cowl, can
reduce wind noise. 2 year
warranty.
